The little I know about Chris Rock repelled from getting out of my way to watch this movie. So I walked into the theatre when nothing else was available. The new face of Tracy Morgan gave me a boost into this adventure. The preview of the movie, with its nonstop nonsense, was terrible at best. Once the movie rolled, the prelude graphics were very creative and diverse. Quickly multiple scenarios kept unfolding till the narrative climaxed into the unexpected intrusion of an outsider blackmailing the grieving family for ransom to keep secret unpleasant affairs of the expired.
Chris Rock surprised me with his focused acting which I never see him doing before. He acted as real people would act in moments of grieve and hardship. Every other scenario that played into the climax appeared well fitting of real life situation. Even the hallucinogenic intake by an oddly unfitting person into a family of different race appeared well calculated with few exceptions.
The intense and fast paced development of crises in a matter of few hours left little room for trivial comedy. Here, every actor is confronted with his or her own share of hardship to overcome. The grieving spouse was faced with the loss of a loved on in the inability of her two sons to give birth to grandchildren who could carry the memory of the expired one. One son was faced with the financial burden of burying his father, covering up on his scandalous past, and putting up with a wife anxious of giving birth before losing it all. The second son was grieving has dad's death by chasing a 19 year old girl.
The funeral that brought remote family members to get together also brought their problems and good heartedness to share. Those who come to funeral expecting short and brief rituals ended up venturing into the boundary of civility. Two drugged relatives' friends ended up on the roof of the house naked and confused. One blackmailer outsider ended up buried alive in the coffin of his alleged lover had it for the short acting valium that got him out of the coffin alive. Three family members barely escaped finishing a crime of murder by the mere luck of the fast-paced and brief events.
The comedy ended on a good not of one son hoping to get his wife pregnant and the other hooking up with a lover half his age.
