This DVD BRIEFLY touches upon the history of plastic surgery. As noted elsewhere, its birth was largely in efforts to assist soldiers whose faces had been damaged in World War I (cf., "Faces of War", Caroline Alexander, Smithsonian Magazine, February 2007). Yet, this DVD primarily deals with (what it appears to intimate are) excesses of optional, cosmetic surgery.
While Michael Jackson may be the example who most quickly comes to mind, all sorts of individuals - NOT JUST CELEBRITIES - apparently opt for cosmetic procedures. When an already attractive person has obviously undergone a procedure, many of us are left to wonder why. A far higher percentage of individuals are undergoing cosmetic procedures, than would likely be guessed. As per Edward Pentin, "In 2008, in the United States alone, over 10 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were performed at a cost of $11.8 billion.... Since 1997, the number of men and women undergoing cosmetic procedures in the U.S. has grown by a staggering 457%. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the most requested surgery in 2008 was breast enlargement followed by liposuction, cosmetic eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and tummy tucks (removal of excess fat and skin)" (National Catholic Register, 2/4/10).
It is undeniable that justifiable plastic surgery can serve a great good for humanity. As far as I know, the Catholic Church has not spoken definitively on the morality of optional, cosmetic procedures. The teaching of the Church certainly seems to oppose unnecessary, unjustified risks to our bodies. The Catechism of the Catholic Church recognizes that our very lives and well being are tremendous gifts from God, for which we are indeed responsible. Still, the Catechsim rejects a so-called "cult of the body," which would place excessive emphasis on physical attractiveness and reminds us that "The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess"(cf., #2288 - #2290).
