(More customer reviews)This poster commemorates the 1933 RKO film, "Our Betters", starring Constance Bennett. Constance plays Pearl, an heiress who learns on her wedding day - immediately after the ceremony - that her husband married her only for her money because he and his true love are penniless. This would mean the end of the marriage before it began for most people, but Pearl stays in the marriage and becomes the chief social attraction of British society. Her husband, the penniless Lord Grayston, gives her status, and she supplies the household with money for a lavish lifestyle. When her money runs out, she receives funds from a wealthy lover.
We don't get to see Pearl turn from the happy bride to the pleasure-seeking manipulative ice queen that she is from the end of the first scene until the last scene of the film, and nothing is said by Constance Bennett that gives us insight into the nature of her motivations. The audience will sense that Pearl's betrayal by her husband is at the root of her bloodless behavior, but the whole thing plays out like a 1930's version of a bad reality show. Nobody in this film is remotely likeable, save for Pearl's younger sister, who is about to make the same mistake that Pearl did. George Cukor usually succeeded at these types of "women's films", primarily with Katharine Hepburn as star. However, Miss Hepburn was brilliant at conveying her emotions without the need for explicit dialogue. Constance Bennett isn't up to this task.
This film is primarily remembered for one thing and one thing only, the appearance of Ernest the dance instructor at the end of the film, complete with lipstick. This is the precode touch that distinguishes the entire production.
