This 1954 color film seems to be a grade B, G movie. People are shot from time to time, but the film shows no wounds and no blood, even when a man is blasted with a shot gun, and Billy is shot in a room while we are viewing the building from the outside.
We are introduced to the famed killer while he is working for a ranch owner, who pays his cowboys and gives Billy only half the pay he gave to others, six dollars. He tells the enraged Billy that since he is a new employee he only deserves half pay. Billy grabs a second six dollars and rides off. The owner asks his men to join him to go after Billy to get back the six dollars. Billy's friend Pat Garrett refuses and is fired. Only one cowboy joins the owner in the chase. The two catch up with Billy. The cowboy draws a gun but Billy is faster and kills the man in self defense. He is now a wanted criminal in that county.
Billy crosses the county line and goes to work for an Englishman named Tunstall. The two like each other. Billy sees Tunstall as a father figure he never had. He falls in love with Tunstall's daughter, Nina, and she with him. This enrages the foreman who wants the girl, and he will become Billy's nemesis. Another rancher, Murphy, wants to harm Tunstall. The foreman leaves Tunstall's employ and tells Murphy that Billy is wanted for murder. Murphy persuades the sheriff to arrest Billy for murder and Tunstall for harboring a fugitive. The posse comes to Tunstall's ranch and one posse member kills Tunstall. Billy swears revenge. He rushes after the killer and shoots him. The sheriff resigns and Pat Garrett is hired as sheriff to capture Billy. He agrees feeling that as sheriff he can stop people from shooting Billy on sight. The governor of the territory, Lew Wallace, who wrote the best-seller Ben Hur, offers Billy a pardon if he would be willing to stop seeking revenge. Nina tries to talk Billy into accepting the governor's proposal. She said she would marry him if he does so. He agrees and gets a ring, but the sheriff who preceded Garrett draws a gun on him and Billy shoots him in self defense and loses his chance for a pardon.
Viewers will see how Pat Garrett pursues Billy, captures him, he is tried, convicted, escapes, kills the foreman, goes to see Nina, and is killed.
