This poster comemorates the 1929 film "The Hollywood Revue". It is not on DVD or VHS, though it was on a laserdisc set entitled "The Dawn of Sound". This movie was made to show that MGM's stars could successfully transition from silent to talking pictures. The irony here is that practically nobody in this film was employed by MGM or any other major studio just four years later.
This particular scene shows - from left to right - Jack Benny, Karl Dane, and George K. Arthur. All three had widely disparate fates in the age of sound films. Jack Benny was a hit in "The Hollywood Revue" but his next picture, "Chasing Rainbows" - made as a sequel of sorts to "The Broadway Melody" - flopped, more due to the public's growing dislike of musical films than anything Benny did. He may have not had a big talkie career, but he did hit the big time in radio followed by his hit TV show which premiered in 1950 and ran for 15 years.
As for Karl Dane and George K. Arthur, sound killed both their careers. As a comedy duo the pair had a fairly successful series of films in the late silent era. Arthur had a distinct Scottish accent that was pleasant enough, but Dane's voice was so gutteral it was almost unintelligible when recorded. Dane wound up unemployable in the film industry and was selling hot dogs from a cart outside of MGM by 1934. The humiliation was too much for him and he shot himself that same year.
Arthur couldn't sustain a comedy career in films without his partner Karl Dane, and by the mid 1930's he ultimately found himself out of work in sound films too. However, he was a modest success at other careers, including one as a producer and distributor of films for TV.
As Paul Harvey would say - "That's the rest of the story."
