Living in a part of Norway where one is lucky to catch a movie the one day it shows on the local cinema, we didn't catch the Troll Hunter until a week ago when we saw it on DVD. The movie has been so hyped here in Norway that I was a bit skeptical, and turned my expectations down before watching it. But I was not disappointed.
It plays as an amateur documentary would. Made by excitable college students, without a whole lot of movie-making experience, but with a lot of enthusiasm. They set of to find out about a series of bear-killings, in a part of the country not known for bears. The mysterious, thought to be bear-killer, "Hans", at first wants nothing to do with them, but as they persist and follow him in to the woods and see the troll havoc for themselves he decides to "spill the beans". When asked why he's had a change of heart and suddenly wants to tell them what they want to know he explains that it has to do with "arbeidsforhold, manglende smusstillegg etc." working conditions, lack of compensation for working with "filth" etc, which for a Norwegian is very important. Normally we have strong unions to fight for our rights as employees, but Hans, off course being the only Troll Hunter, does not have a union to fight his battles for him, and disgruntled decides to use these students to get some leverage.
A lot of the comments, and the folklore around the trolls might be less accessible for non- Norwegians, but be assured this movie covers everything. Thomas, one of the students, asks "Can you talk to them? Can you for instance have an eating competition with one?" alluding to a tale all Norwegians have heard as children, where a boy tricks a troll in to slitting his own stomach so he can eat more, but killing himself in stead. Stone-faced Hans answers, "There's a big difference between fairy tales and real life!" But although our prior knowledge of trolls helps us understand a few more "inside-jokes" and facts about trolls, this knowledge is also a spoiler in itself which the non-Norwegians won't have. I would think anyone with a descent sense of humor will enjoy this movie, and I recommend seeing it in Norwegian if you can. The acting sounds very natural, and the characters are believable.
The movie has a lot of memorable comments and events, and I am glad we bought the DVD in stead of renting it as this is a movie I will definitely see again, and again.
